My woodcuts are a complicated matrix of legible and indecipherable glyphs, scripts and symbols, lines and pattern. They are continually inspired by forms and patterns found in nature. Ironically, my topic and my woodcut surface are often closely related. The richly grained wood surface also responds to the tactile, repetitive nature of carving my marks. It is through my graphic marks and highly contrasting patterns that I have been able to describe my subjects in an animated, dramatic, and technically meticulous way. I have chosen to create my woodcut prints in a series format. The flexibility of working this way lets me see my woodcut as a single image and also belonging to a group placed within a specific order.
